Texts in the public domain

The King James Version (1769) and Det Norske Bibelselskap's Norwegian Bible (1930) are in the public domain, as are Nave's Topical Bible (1897), Brown, Driver and Briggs' Hebrew and English Lexicon of the Old Testament (1906), Thayer's Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament (1889) and Strong's numbering (1890). These are the texts this site stores and serves itself.

The cross-references are from OpenBible.info, used under CC BY.

The photograph on the front page — a shepherd and his flock at a pool — is a glass plate by the American Colony Photo Department in Jerusalem, from a set of slides of shepherd life they made to illustrate the Twenty-third Psalm. It is in the Matson Collection at the Library of Congress, and in the public domain. It illustrates the psalm beside it; it does not claim to show its writer.

What this site keeps

This site stores the public-domain and CC BY texts above, and the NET Bible® text by its publisher's permission. The ESV is not stored here: choosing it has your own browser fetch that text from bolls.life and keep it on your own device, and this site neither holds a copy nor passes one on.

It is served as static files from one origin, with no trackers. What you download is the text itself, and on the front page one photograph served from here. The requests that leave this site are the ESV text your browser fetches for itself, when it is the translation you read in — as it is unless you choose another — and the video on the front page, only if you play it.

If you have an account, the site emails its address only about the account itself: a link to verify the address, to choose a new password or to confirm a new address, and a note when the password or the address changes. That mail is sent through Google's Gmail, so Google handles it. It is plain text, with nothing in it that reports back whether it was opened.

This site is not commercial. It carries no advertising, no sponsorship, and nothing on it is for sale.
